Arc of a Circle

Arc:

A continuous part of a circle between two points is called an arc for the circle. Consider ant two points on a circle say M and N. These points define two arcs. for the circle

Semi- Circle:

An arc which is defined by the end points of the diameter is called a semi-circle.

Minor Arc:

The arc whose length is less than the semi-circle it is called minor arc.

Major Arc:

The arc whose length is more than the semi-circle it is called a major arc.

Central Angle:

The angle which the arc subtends at the centre is called central angle. In the figure angleMON is the central angle. It is called the degree measure of the arc.

Sector:

The region between an arc and the two radii joining the centre to the end points of the arc is called a sector.

Minor Sector:

The sector formed by the minor arc is called minor sector. The sector formed by the two radii and the minor arc is called a minor sector.

Major Sector:

The sector formed by the major arc is called major sector. The sector formed by the two radii and the major arc is called a major sector.

Quadrant of a Circle:

The sector formed by an arc which is equal to one fourth of the circumference, is called a quadrant of the circle.
